The Overview
CEREC - which stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics - is a digital dentistry system that lets us design, mill, and seat a permanent porcelain crown entirely within one appointment. Instead of taking a messy impression, sending it to an off-site lab, sending you home with a temporary crown for two to three weeks, and bringing you back for a second visit, we capture a precise 3D digital scan of your tooth chairside and use that data to design your restoration on screen in minutes.
Once your dentist approves the design, a block of tooth-colored ceramic is placed into an in-office milling unit, which sculpts your custom crown with sub-millimeter accuracy while you relax in the chair. After a brief glaze and polish, your restoration is bonded into place - typically within one to two hours from start to finish. There is no second numbing appointment, no loose or leaking temporary, and no waiting weeks to enjoy full function again.
At Dentistry of Uptown Charlotte, we've built CEREC technology directly into our South Tryon Street practice so that a broken cusp, a large failing filling, or a cracked tooth can be diagnosed and definitively treated in a single, convenient visit - a meaningful advantage for busy Uptown professionals who don't have time for multiple dental appointments.
Warning Signs
A crown becomes necessary whenever a tooth has lost too much structure to support a filling reliably, or when its outer shell is at risk of fracturing under normal biting forces. Many patients don't realize how close a tooth is to needing this level of restoration until an exam reveals hidden cracks or decay beneath the surface. Recognizing the early indicators below can help you avoid an emergency visit and preserve more of your natural tooth.
Candidacy
Most patients who need a crown are excellent candidates for the same-day CEREC approach, but a thorough clinical evaluation still matters. Your dentist will examine the extent of decay or fracture, the health of the surrounding gum tissue, and the position of the tooth in your bite before recommending this option. In the vast majority of cases, CEREC delivers outcomes equal to - or better than - traditional lab-fabricated crowns, with the added benefit of finishing everything in one appointment.
During your visit, we'll also confirm that the digital scan can capture a clean, accurate impression of the prepared tooth, which typically means good access, manageable saliva control, and no active infection that needs to be addressed first. If deeper issues are present - such as a tooth requiring a root canal or significant bone support concerns - we'll discuss those steps before moving forward with the permanent restoration.
Materials & Options
Not every tooth calls for the same restorative material, and part of what makes CEREC dentistry so effective is the ability to select a ceramic block engineered for the specific demands of the tooth being restored. We evaluate the tooth's location in the mouth, the forces it will absorb during chewing, and your cosmetic priorities before choosing the ideal block for milling.
All of the materials we use are metal-free, biocompatible, and shade-matched to your natural teeth so the finished crown is virtually indistinguishable from the tooth beside it. We also use CEREC technology to fabricate same-day inlays, onlays, and veneers when a full crown isn't necessary, giving us a full spectrum of conservative, precision-milled options.
The Advantages
Beyond the obvious time savings, CEREC crowns offer measurable clinical and lifestyle advantages compared to traditional two-visit crowns. Because the restoration is designed, milled, and bonded during one appointment, there is less handling of the prepared tooth, fewer opportunities for bacterial contamination, and no vulnerable interim period where a temporary crown might dislodge or leak.
After Your Visit
Because your CEREC crown is permanently bonded on the day of your visit, aftercare is refreshingly simple - there's no temporary to protect, and you can resume most normal habits almost immediately. Some mild sensitivity to temperature or pressure is common for a few days as the tooth and surrounding gum tissue settle, and this typically resolves on its own without intervention.
With attentive daily care, a CEREC crown can comfortably last 10 to 15 years or longer. Longevity depends heavily on your oral hygiene routine, whether you grind or clench your teeth at night, and keeping up with regular professional checkups so we can monitor the crown margins and surrounding tissue.
The Process
After numbing the area, your dentist gently removes decay or old restorative material and shapes the tooth to receive its new crown, preserving as much healthy structure as possible.
A small handheld scanner captures a highly detailed 3D image of the prepared tooth and bite in minutes - no trays, no impression putty, no discomfort.
Using specialized CAD software, your dentist designs the crown on screen - fine-tuning contours, contacts, and bite alignment for a precise, comfortable fit.
A ceramic block matched to your tooth shade is loaded into our in-office milling unit, which carves your custom crown to exact specifications in about 15-20 minutes.
The milled crown is stained and glazed to match the exact translucency and shade of your natural teeth, then polished to a smooth, natural finish.
Your dentist bonds the finished crown permanently in place and fine-tunes your bite, so you leave with a fully functional, natural-feeling tooth the same day.
Our Difference
Not every practice invests in the technology, training, and time required to deliver truly excellent same-day restorations. At our South Tryon Street office, CEREC dentistry is fully integrated into how we practice - meaning you receive a crown designed with genuine artistry, not just software defaults.
Common Questions
Most CEREC appointments take between one and two hours from start to finish, depending on the complexity of the tooth and whether any additional treatment is needed beforehand. You'll leave with a fully bonded, permanent crown rather than a temporary one.
Yes. The ceramic materials used in CEREC restorations are engineered specifically for strength and are milled with the same accuracy as lab-fabricated crowns. With proper care, they typically last 10 to 15 years or longer, comparable to conventional crowns.
Absolutely. We use digital shade matching along with hand staining and glazing to ensure the crown blends seamlessly with the surrounding teeth in both color and translucency, so it's virtually undetectable in your smile.
The area is fully numbed before any tooth preparation, so the procedure itself is comfortable. Some patients experience mild sensitivity for a day or two afterward, which typically resolves on its own without any special treatment.
Most teeth are excellent candidates, but your dentist will evaluate factors such as the extent of decay, gum health, and bite position first. In rare cases where a tooth requires additional treatment, such as a root canal, we'll address that before proceeding with the permanent crown.
Most dental insurance plans cover crowns at the same benefit level regardless of whether they're same-day or traditional lab-fabricated restorations. Our team will help verify your coverage and walk you through expected costs before treatment begins.
